So maybe the problem was that he was just naive and ignorant?

As I said later, it makes no difference whether he is considered crazy or sane because his acts spoke for themselves. The acts were insane. They included a reckless invasion of Kuwait he knew or should have known would not be tolerated, a debilitating and stupid war with Iran, nuclear efforts that were on the verge of succeding, the use of WMD on his own population, the development of chemical and biological weapons, a conspiracy to assassinate a former American President, and his expulsion in 1998 of the inspectors.

What else do you need to establish his penchant for taking enormously stupid risks? What he actually did was convincing enough. Given his history, why do you think he was likely to become an altar boy?
