X, the NYT recently reported that Saddam, while in jail, told his captors that one of the reasons he invaded Kuwait is because he suspected a coup plot in the Army and wanted to keep the officers otherwise engaged.

This kind of reason is internally-driven, and is not very susceptible to outside winks and nods. In fact, it looks like America needed to deliver a 2x4 between the eyes to have headed off the Kuwait invasion.
