That article is being pasted on a lot of threads and being taken at face value by a lot of naive readers.
I wonder if the Republicans invited Denton to observe Independence Day, or to make a partisan speech attacking Kerry, calling him a traitor, saying he wasn't fit to be president, that sort of thing. I wonder, I wonder, if it was about politics or about a sudden, very sudden, in fact apparently unprecedented, Republican interest in a non-partisan observance of an important national holiday for all Americans? Cheap shot in an election year, or noble patriotism, which?
Didn't Bush say "I'm a uniter, not a divider"? How funny is that?
Does anyone have the text of his talk, or did they just release the poem and the story about how the Republicans believe in the 4th of July and all the unAmerican Democrats believe in is Cinco de Mayo?
Anybody think Denton was invited specifically to bash Kerry? In the past he's called Kerry a traitor and said Hillary should be in prison. He's a extremist fundamentalist religious nutjob, exhorting even Nick Berg's family to "come to Christ". He lists many Congresspeople and Senators (all Democrats) that he assures the Bergs are responsible for their son's death, and calls traitors for disagreeing with the Republican candidate for the presidency.
The man has a good excuse for being what he is: in Vietnam, he was tortured and was and kept in solitary confinement for years. He's a genuine hero. But the fact that he has a right to be anything he wants to be, and believe whatever got him, and gets him, through the night, doesn't excuse the Republicans cynically using him for such purposes and pretending it's all about Independence Day. Bad, unpatriotic Cinco de Mayo Democrats!
FYI, for Denton background, this is regarding and including quotes from a past speech of Denton's:

From the publisher of Christian-news-in-maine.com regarding the brutal death of 26 year old Mr. Nick Berg.
Only Christ can get the Bergs through this.
Wednesday May 12th, 2004
While he was brutally murdered late last week, the news and details of young Mr. Nick Berg's brutal death only came to light yesterday. Or at least only became known to the general public yesterday. Members of the Berg family, the administration, the US Military and the members of the House and Senate Armed Forces Committee's knew about Mr. Berg's death and the brutal details this last Sunday.
It was eleven years ago that Mike Bemis, the York County Sheriff at the time, knocked on my door in Kennebunkport. It was ten at night and Mike was dressed in a suit with a freshly ironed shirt. Now I had known Mike for a while and headed up a committee for him, therefore I knew Mike to be an early to bed and early to rise guy, one accustomed to starting work a few minutes before the cock crew. So, seeing him dressed up at that time of night told me that Mike had gotten out of bed, gotten dressed up and driven five miles for what ever reason it was that brought him to my porch that night. Moments later, as Mike stood in my kitchen looking at the floor, he mumbled, "I'm sorry Bob, Andrew is dead." And my world changed, the old world died along with a large hunk of me, in that very instant. Andrew was 18 years old. He would have graduated Kennebunk High School in weeks, and now he was dead. And I will never ever forget the howl of pain from my wife.
I don't relay the above to elicit your sympathy, I tell you about it so that you will understand when I say, "I know how hurt the Bergs are, I know what Mr. Berg is feeling, my wife knows what Mrs. Berg is going through, and my two boys know what Nick's brothers are going through." Unlike the Bergs I was fortunate enough to have a dear friend bring the horrible news of my son's death to me. I thank God for Mike Bemis, I thank God that Mike was the sheriff that year and not some stranger who would have sent a lackey.
If you take the time to go to: Christian-news-in-maine.com , you will find a short biography of Admiral Jeremiah Denton, you will also find his entire letter concerning John Kerry and his total unfitness to hold the office of Commander and Chief. I am going to quote from the Admirals letter, but first just a short bit to remind you about Jeremiah:
In 1973, Jeremiah A. Denton, Jr., walked off an Air Force C-141 aircraft to freedom after being held captive in North Vietnam for more than seven years. Born in 1924 in Mobile Alabama, Denton graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1946. In June 1965, he was assigned to Attack Squadron 75 on the USS Independence flying the Grumman A-6 Intruder. On 18 July 1965, while pulling up after leading a bombing attack on enemy installations near Thanh Hoa, he was shot down and captured by North Vietnamese troops. While held prisoner, Denton became the first American subjected to four years of solitary confinement.
In 1966, during a television interview by the North Vietnamese and broadcast on American television, Denton gained national attention when, while being questioned, he blinked his eyes in Morse code, repeatedly spelling out the covert message "T-O-R-T-U-R-E".
And now, from the Admiral's letter, these words about Kerry and his comments while we were at war, much the same as words spoken by members of the House and Senate Armed Forces Committees, even after they knew about Nick Berg's slaughter.
"Knowing that I served in the U.S. Senate with John Kerry and that, like him, I am a veteran of the Vietnam War, many people have asked me what I think of him, particularly now that he's the apparent presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.
When Kerry joined me in the Senate, I already knew about his record of defamatory remarks and behavior criticizing U.S. policy in Vietnam and the conduct of our military personnel there. I had learned in North Vietnamese prisons how much harm such statements caused.
To me, his remarks and behavior amounted to giving aid and comfort to our Vietnamese and Soviet enemies. ..."
As over 130,000 of our young men and women serve in a war declared by congress in response to the vicious attack on the USA September 11th, 2001, there are members of the US House of Representatives and US Senate that are not only using them, their service and their deaths for political gain, there are some who are openly, and in an ongoing manner, giving aid, comfort and encouragement to the enemy through their actions, speech, and votes. Without the open and ongoing support of these members of our government, I do not believe for even one moment that the brutal inhumane slaughter of Nick Berg would have taken place. Just as John Kerry's words gave aid, comfort, encouragement and was used a moral boaster for the enemy, so are these members of Congresses words bolstering up our enemies today.
As a father who has had to face the sudden and violent death of a son, I could not help but put myself in the place of Mr. Berg. I can not even begin to imagine my response had I heard that Andrew died as Nick Berg did. Over the next few months Mr. Berg is going to say some things that might sound a bit insane to many of you, I know, for I am convinced that I suffered a nervous breakdown after Andrews death. Someone should have taken my guns. It is only by the grace of God that I made it through those days without hurting myself or someone else.
But, as time goes by, with the help of the Lord Jesus, Mr. Berg will start to return, only he will be different, he will not have the same priorities, he will no longer have the same allegiances that he now has. He will be a different man, a driven man. As I am driven to preach, as my priorities changed from money to Christ, so will Mr. Berg change. How and what that change will be? I don't know, God knows, but I don't, even Mr. Berg doesn't have any idea of what the Mr. Berg of 2005 will be like. But this I know, he will be different, he will reach a time when he is going to watch that tape of his son's last seconds. He will spend the next months trying to comfort and protect his wife and other kids, but in a year, maybe two, he will see the tape and he will change.
One of the things that will change Mr. Berg is, that eventually, he will come to the same conclusion that Admiral Denton, I, Senator Jim Inhofe ®) Oklahoma, and others have arrived at. The conclusion that without the help and support of: these congressman: Marty Meehan (D) Massachusetts, Loretta Sanchez (D) California, Ciro D. Rodriguez (D) Texas, Ellen O. Tauscher (D) California, John B. Larson (D) Connecticut, John B. Larson (D) Connecticut, James R. Langevin (D) Rhode Island, Steve Israel (D) New York, Rick Larsen (D) Washington, Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D) Guam, and Tim Ryan (D) Ohio.
And these Senators Carl Levin (D) Michigan, Edward M. Kennedy (D)Massachusetts, Robert C. Byrd (D) West Virginia, Joseph I. Lieberman (D) Connecticut, Jack Reed (D) Rhode Island, Daniel K. Akaka (D) Hawaii, Bill Nelson (D) Florida, E. Benjamin Nelson (D) Nebraska, Mark Dayton (D) Minnesota, Evan Bayh (D) Indiana, Hillary Rodham Clinton (D) New York, Susan M. Collins ®) Maine, and John McCain ®) Arizona and of course the committee chair John Warner ®) Virginia. His son's captors would never had the nerve to behead a US civilian non combatant. The terrorists would in all probability have already surrendered or run out of manpower willing to face US military might, they would have realized they had no chance of winning.
Eventually, Mr. Berg will realize that these members of House and Senate, along with many others, are responsible for his son's death. For it was their support that gave encouragement to the enemy, the enemy who brutally slaughtered his son. And then we will see what the change will bring, I have no idea what I would have done had I been in the same circumstances. In a year I will write a letter to Mr. Berg, I will ask him to leave the revenge of his son's death to Jesus. I will aks him to turn to Romans 12:19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
While I have no respect for those who killed young Nick Berg, I have read the book The Haj by Leon Uris and have some understanding of the hate filled lives the Muslims lead but for those in the House and Senate listed above, for them I have nothing but contempt, absolute and utter contempt. For they are not only giving aid, comfort and encouragement to the enemy, they are not only getting our young men and women in uniform killed every day, they are directly responsible for the deaths of US Civilians taken hostage by those Islamic radicals who these members of Congress have aligned themselves. They are committing treason and our government hasn't the guts to deal with them. In my opinion, Hillary Clinton should be imprisoned for crimes committed while her husband was president, Kennedy should be in prison for the murder of a young girl, Collins should be in prison for the crimes she committed to get elected, Byrd should be imprisoned for the crimes he committed and or covered up as a leader of the KKK, and Warner should be horse whipped for not having the guts to stop them from using the committee forum as a pulpit for their US Military hate speech. And the list goes on.
My heart and my prayers go out to Mr. Berg and his family. And I pray God that he and his will turn to Christ, for without the help of the Lord, there is no way he will make it.
I pray the one day Mr. Berg will find these verse: Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30 ACP/KJV)
Gentlemen, let us commit to praying daily for the Lord's protection, guidance and help for us and our nation. Amen.
