Making it pay
By Dr Madsen Pirie Transport

Burt Rutan has been talking about how to make commercial spaceflight pay. He thinks the passengers will want to move around while they experience zero gravity, and will want a good view. This suggests a roomy craft with big windows. For flights into orbit, he thinks people will not want to spend their holiday in a small cramped vehicle. This suggests a 'space hotel' reached by a fast transit service. He thinks the price must come down as second generation vehicles build on advances made by the first ones.

It is reported that people like Paul Allen might be prepared to club together to develop such vehicles. Like many new economic crazes (including the early railways), it seems fuelled by a mixture of idealism and commercial opportunity. No doubt some will be over-extended and lose money for their investors. But some will make it, offering spectacular rides to the likes of us. At least no-one yet seems to be suggesting that government should take over space tourism and fund it publicly.
