I would suggest that the loss of Haiti is what made Napoleon willing to give up Louisiana. Haiti was a tremendous source of wealth for the French, while Louisiana operated at a loss at the time.

Short sighted, yes. But Napoleon does not appear to have had a firm grasp of geopolitics beyond Europe.
