Symonds Praises Safety Standards after Trulli Crash

Sunday July 11th, 2004

Renault's executive director of engineering Pat Symonds praised the safety levels in Formula One after seeing Jarno Trulli walk away unscathed from a 240kph crash in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Italian Trulli lost control of his car on lap 40 after a suspected suspension failure and ploughed into barriers before spinning and barrel-rolling on the exit of Silverstone's Bridge turn.

Remarkably Trulli was able to walk away from his crippled car after the crash and needed only a precautionary examination at Silverstone's medical centre before returning to the team's motorhome.

But Symonds, a campaigner for the reduction of speeds in Formula One, insisted that even though Trulli had been unharmed in the accident the sport must still slow down.

"It is a tribute to safety standards that he could hit a barrier and roll at that speed and get out of the car on his own steam," said Symonds. "But that does not disprove the argument over high speeds.

"It will certainly not harm racing to slow the cars down and I would much rather pre-empt a big accident than mull it over afterwards. We still want to reduce speeds and we are taking active steps to make it happen."
