Alan, are you familiar with the book, "The Apocalypse of Peter"? It's one of the books that was very popular in the 4th century but was not included in the Canon because of it's contents and they could not prove that it was actually written by Peter so they instead used "the Revelation of John" because it waas considered in line with their standards..

I was told that Peter, (in Heaven) as he looks upon the tortures of those who went to hell (apparently they are able to see hell from Heaven) questions God about the fairness of people suffering for eternity. Whereupon God says something like I will tell you a secret but it must be kept strictly quite. I will eventually save those who are in hell but if it were well known then those who are living would have no reason not to sin if they knew of my intentions.

As I said, the book was not Canonized but perhaps that is partially where Universalism and the Catholic Pergatory doctrine began.
