Alan - tell me the meaning of eon in this verse:

Hebrews 7:17 For he testifieth,
Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

When does Christ stop being a priest in your system?

Just curious.

The failure of the Aaronic priesthood was that it did not effect a reconciliation between God and His creatures. Christ will effect such a reconciliation. Christ's priesthood will end when He hands the perfected kingdom to His God and Father at the end of the millennial reign.

The only way Christ's Melchizedek priesthood would last forever (instead of for the eon) would be if it never brought anything to perfection or finality. Then there would be a temple and priesthood on the new earth; and it would continue beyond the end of the ages.

Priesthood is a sign of estrangement; it vanishes when God is at peace with His people. It is limited to one eon, beyond which there can be no priesthood, because there is no estrangement.
