Almost forgot. Buying Puts is another way of going short.
With puts you have limited loss in case the stock goes up, whereas your potential losses are unlimited if you are short the common shares and the stock goes into rally mode.

Ex.-I shorted USRX about a year and a half ago at 120. It rallied to 220. Since I had shorted 1000 shares, I could have been in DEEP doodoo had I not put an upper stop on it right above where I inititiated the short position.
I lost a couple grand, but made up for it bigime when I shorted it again at 220 a couple months later.
