All the horrendous problems arising from the need for a steady supply of oil to power America's industries and whatnot should begin to wean America's dependence on Middle East oil.

To be sure some efforts are underway to produce hybrid-powered vehicles --- vehicles powered by a combination of electricity from hydrogen fuel cells and solar panels and heat energy from propane, diesel and gasoline.

But such efforts seem somewhat half-hearted, IMO. Simply because there's still so much oil available in the Middle East and elsewhere and it is far easier and cheaper to extract and process the oil. Also, it seems sensible to use up the oil as much as possible before switching completely over to other energy sources (even as these technologies would have become available in the foreseeable future when the oil is still not yet depleted.) BTW, I understand that in some nuclear submarines, electricity is obtained directly from uranium. Maybe this technology could be safely adapted for use in cars of the future.

But there's a rub here as terrorists might find a way to exploit the uranium??????
