In 1996 the U.S. Bureau of Mines was deactivated, and the facility and mineral assessment functions were transferred to the Bureau of Land Management and named the Juneau Mineral Information Center. On October 23, 2003, the facility was renamed the Juneau – John Rishel Mineral Information Center. John Rishel was a great advocate for the mining industry and Alaska.
