I think the big part of the equation that the American people don't get about our democratic political system is that it is more of an illusion than a reality. The fact is the rich and powerful are going to get their way regardless of what democratic institutions want, and often democracy is manipulated to benefit those same rich and powerful people. Oh how convient government regulation has become to stiffle competition in the marketplace.
