The P1000 would be a nice comparison but neither printer would be a good choice for him. He is already into vinyl cutting so he has the required software to cut it. All good vinyl cutting software has evolved into a print & cut solution and he can probably get an upgrade for less than $1000. This allows a user to print onto vinyl and then cut it out. It is extremely wonderful and I just recieved today my copy of FlexiSIGN-PRO from Amiable Technologies ( flexisign.com ). It is THE only way to go for someone in his business and machines that combine the two technologies can be purchased for less than $3000 with the hi-end coming in at $20k. Encad and Roland are the main players here. Roland even has a Piezo printer/Cutter that will probably become the defacto standard.

Interestingly enough, my new software has support for the Mimaki version of the P1000, but not for the RGFX printer itself. Lovely.

You can supplement an existing vinyl cutter with a printer but then you have to line up the media as it is transfered from one machine to the other and really isn't handy for hi volume.

As for Gerber, they have crummy printers that are wayyyy overpriced but they do have a wonderful vinyl business (which is supplied by 3M) that has become the standard for hi end jobs. I have thousands of dollars worth of Gerber vinyl sitting next to me as I type this. I see plenty of growth for this company because they supply media for just about every popular printer out there.
