This is the Liberal argument, but historians are coming around to the other POV.

The argument that communism was inherently unstable and doomed to stagnation and failure no matter what we did hardly seems liberal to me. It’s way too soon to get much perspective from historians – they will see what they want to see, and their work will tell us more about the bias of the historian in question than anything else.
