Saddam was prepared to come to terms with U.S. - Zhirinovsky

Interfax. Monday, Jul. 12, 2004, 8:23 PM Moscow Time

MOSCOW. July 12 (Interfax) - Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was prepared to negotiate with the United States and could have been persuaded to fight Al-Qaeda, Liberal Democratic Party of Russia leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky told party members while picketing at the Iraqi Embassy in Russia on Monday.
"Saddam Hussein was not an enemy of America. He was always prepared for talks, and if the Americans had pit him against Al-Qaeda, then [the organization] would have ceased to exist a long time ago," he said.
"Saddam was Russia's only friend, and he was prepared to repay a $9 billion debt to Russia. He did not bear a grudge against Russia or the United States," Zhirinovsky said. He called on the U.S. authorities to "stop tormenting" the former Iraqi president
