The marketplace of ideas can be a very powerful thing, but when it degenerates into a shrieking food fight, very little wisdom emerges. I don’t see the threat to American democracy today coming from either the right or the left exclusively, but from excessive polarization, and from the domination of discourse by extremists on both sides.

Words of wisdom, Steven. I have only one caveat. One of the extremists is the House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay. With a helluva lot of political power. Quotes from DeLay are classic right wing extremism. And the recent revelations from the growing stockpile of Enron documents makes it even clearer the role he has played in pushing American politics to the very far right.
