Why would a government monopoly be any better than a competitive marketplace in efficiently delivering quality health care?

First look at the current free market healthcare system that we already have. Does it do a good job of delivering healthcare to the people? What percentage of Americans are uninsured? When these folks are beset by a severe illness what happens?

I think we can do much better than we have with healthcare. Should we have a national single payer health insurance? I think it should be up for debate. Personally I believe that a government regulated non profit healthcare system would be a better vehicle for delivering health services than the system we now have.

Privatization is not always the answer. We have privatized a portion of our military, by giving huge contracts to Haliburton to feed our troops. That's something the military used to do a pretty good job of...but now we pay three times as much for Haliburton to do it. I guess that is a bad example of the free market at work because these contracts were let on a no bid basis.

And privatization and deregulation of our utilities like water and electricity has led to huge speculative price bubbles that have bankrupted many utilities as they tried to pay the back room brokered prices of "free market" electricity. Companies like Enron simply raided public and private utilities alike...then slipped off with the money. Then they let the whole house of cards fall to the ground taking many folks down with it. When you leave the people's business to corporate crooks...who do you think they will be looking out for? If you think it's the people...then you have a lot to learn.
