If Canada had a defense system it would:

1. enjoy better relations with the US, who is doing the heavy lifting on N. American defense
2. have better fiscal responsibility, as the Cdn gov't couldn't continue to fritter away funds on sponsorship scandals and gun registry as the tried to keep the top marginal tax rate below 75% while trying to spend on defense above the OECD median
3. enjoy technological innovation (Avro Aero), and get rid of Bombardier and their tin can jeeps, the helicopters that are unsafe
4. deter more militant nations (N. Korea?) from interest in Canadian assets
5. make sure Canada can defend its assets instead of relying on US defense, which would then be, say, a war between US and China OVER Canadian assets instead of a war between US+Canada vs China to DEFEND Canadian assets. (America wouldn't want a payback?)

I think it is imprudent to believe that there will be no military action over the next 20yrs for the following, of which Canada has ample:

*fresh water
*oil and NG
*grains
*minerals
*forest products

Nuclear weapons proliferation is expanding, with terrorism the world a more dangerous place, and Canada needs a defense policy distinct from the US.

Maybe Martin's G-20 is a good start, but Harper would have been better at preparing Canada for the future.
