A Stronger Canadian defense would allow Canada to pursue it's own foreign policy objectives instead of waiting for the US or the EU.

Haiti would be a good example - there has been extensive US reluctance to get involved. The US is avoiding much African involment also.

One key would be to make sure Canadian interests were followed, and not captured by UK policy objectives.

This defense capability needs to be built early - if Canada waits until it becomes obvious (say, Eastern Siberia splits from Russia) it may be too late to be effective.
