The mall/strip mall culture also killed communities, but our generation doesn't know the difference. We never had a Main Street or town square to stroll around, where townspeople saw and got to know each other. That's just a quaint anachronism. Pity - our lives are poorer and fatter as a result. Another commentary on modern life from Joe Morgenstern at WSJ: "At a screening of "Anchorman" the other night, a security guy cruised the aisles during the show, surveilling the audience with a nightscope to make sure none of us was perpetrating video piracy. What optimism, I thought. Why would anyone pay to see this dumb sendup of local TV news, let alone pirate it, when a higher -- i.e. irony-free -- grade of stupidity can be seen for free on almost any local station?"
