He is really into the swashbuckling type book that Patrick O'Brian wrote.....especially the Aubrey/Maturin series. He was devastated when O'Brian died.

If that's the case, I doubt he will like any of Dunnett's stuff. It's not swashbuckling. In fact, I started thinking as to whether her work is male or female specific as I started this reply to you and decided it's neither. Which is rare.

Given those interests, he's actually more likely to like something Bill recommended to me, Jack Whyte's retelling of the Arthurian legend. It's swashbuckling, not particularly good history, but good story telling of the sort your friend might like.

I'll be surprised if he likes Dunnett. Though, if he has a preference for swashbuckling, the Lymond series is better than the Nicolo series. At least on that score. I think, however, she is a better storyteller by the time she does the Nicolo series.

But Dunnett's stuff is genuinely densely historical. Intricate, small pieces of information.
