You attributed sinister reasons as to why Intel didn't recognize it as a problem at that time.

If you don't think that Intel is very conscious of meeting Wall Street estimates and sometimes manages the business in order to meet those estimates rather than in order to do things in the most efficient manner, you need a reality check. IMO, every company in the S&P 500 save for perhaps 5 or 6 manage their business way, way too much to please Wall Street.

The only question here is the extent to which Intel will go to meet Wall Street estimates. I think we'd both agree that intentionally building inventory just to keep gross margin up and meet the numbers isn't a very smart thing to do.
