Along those lines,

my good friend's Uncle Jack was on Jeopardy back in 84 or 85. By Final Jeopardy, Uncle Jack had a commanding but not unbeatable lead. Apparently, during the commercial break before the final round each player gets betting advice from show staffers. Uncle Jack refused to follow their advice.

Instead, he bet exactly enough so that if he got it right, and the guy way back in second place bet everything and also got it right, then they would tie. As Uncle Jack described it, why not give the other guy a chance and share the winnings if possible. As it turned out, they both answered correctly, the other guy did bet it all, and they tied.

The next day they both returned and the other guy completely creamed Uncle Jack.
