Much of what is discussed here seems aimed at preventing a discussion of foreign policy -- just thought I should check first. 1) The "Bush Doctrine" is at the root of our foreign policy problems. It was bad policy and badly implemented. 2) Iraq is the wrong place to focus our attention because we immediately get stuck in really irrelevant questions -- forgive me -- like "is Iraq better off without Saddam". Iraq in the context of our foreign policy is, however, highly instructive, and we should learn all we can from what has gone wrong in Iraq. 3) Our foreign policy on terror has languished and needs a far sharper focus. We need to do more than try to find people and kill them. This is related to #2. The war on terror is one part security to ten parts "hearts and minds". Yet our policies have gutted support for the United States around the world and put us in a deep hole in the battle for hearts and minds. The war on terror is going very badly indeed, and our policies relating to the war on terror need to be redesigned. Are you ready for a serious discussion of foreign policy?
