But the whole idea is local politics, not the federal government dicatating policy. That's messy democracy. It's THE fundamental conservative principle. And even though Kerry can't seem to articulate it, it's what he's saying wrt driver licenses.

I agree, that is a state issue. Don't kid yourself though, the whole point of coming out with I believe one thing, but I won't do anything about it is to appeal to both sides. Granted, the license thing isn't as clear an example as abortion (which is a federal issue), but Kerry is still trying to have it both ways.

I don't care who anyone votes for. But if you vote for Bush, don't kid yourself that you are voting for a conservative. And if you vote for Kerry, don't kid yourself that you are voting for a liberal.

Bush definitely isn't as conservative as he should be (education, farm bill etc.), but Kerry is definitely a liberal. Just look at his voting record.

Perhaps the "election season" version of Kerry is more moderate, but the real thing is not. Edwards pulled the same trick in his senate race. He presented himself as a smack in the middle moderate, and he had no record to go against, so people bought it. Then, once he was elected, he's out there voting with Kerry and Kennedy. That's why he was going to lose if he ran again.

Unlike Edwards, Kerry has to deal with his past record so he has the tougher job.
