FCC Chairman Powell: The Future is Bright for Powerline Broadband

[ftth: Bright like an atomic bomb explosion???]

Menlo Park, CA—Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael K. Powell issued the following statement following a demonstration of broadband over powerline technology at AT&T labs today. The demonstration was sponsored by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and AT&T.

“Powerline technology holds the great promise to bring high-speed Internet access to every power outlet in America. What I saw today has the potential to play a key role in meeting our goals to expand the availability and affordability of broadband. AT&T and Pacific Gas and
Electric are to be applauded for leading the way for this innovative technology.

“The future is bright for powerline broadband. We’ll continue at the FCC to explore ways to support this technology while protecting other services from interference.”
-FCC

[ftth: Protecting other services from interference is easy. It's called "fiber." The only way to achieve non-interference w/ powerline is to change the definition of interference. Powerline is an uncontrolled impedance transmission line. It radiates. Period. It also conducts unwanted signals to all connected homes, subscribers or not, and all devices plugged in to those homes. Oh!!! Now I get it. The FBI must love this. Who cares about CALEA concerns if there is ubiquitous powerline BB? That's certainly one way to solve the problem.
