We could all have a pleasant, peaceful time shooting heroin and nodding, but that does not constitute a dignified and satisfying human life to most of us. We remember because it matters that humanity has stood erect on this earth and sought to make its mark. We remember because we are the product of various strands of that history, and we want to discover how we got here, and what is at stake, better. We remember because we are human, and crave to know. We remember because it may help us to learn how to do better. We remember because it makes us human.
