I think there are other methods to try first, before you send a person on a path of addiction.

In the case of migraine, I don't think a doctor should prescribe stadol or fioricet or hydrocodone or any painkiller until the patient has tried to alter diet and maybe even physical therapy. I know a few migraine sufferers, and none of them are willing to give up alcohol. Many of them smoke, eat cheese, etc. These people shouldn't be on painkillers yet.

Painkillers have a place, but there are a lot of other therapies worth trying out first. Once addicted to any painkiller, you're basically screwed for life in terms of being able to take anything similar.

I'm off to the Windy City for a few days, so maybe we can continue this discussion later.
