Maurice, my guess is the GSM crowd is still stuck on the idea that their portion of the cellular pie is so much larger than that of CDMA core networks, that eventually, when W-CDMA matures (and when the bugs are all worked out), the system will be huge and interoperable anywhere there are people. The phones by then will be plentiful and cheap, with many to chose from, and the overall cost to the subscriber would, by then, be less.
I am sure they know by now that WCDMA can be made to peak at 2 Mbps. Beyond this, I am not sure they fully understand the importance of speed. They have had plenty of time to figure out the importance of speed, that is for sure. Maybe as the pressure builds...as more and more applications are up-and-running that can only work with a system as fast as EV-DO, will they fully understand.
Then there is the issue of the euro regs that still specify WCDMA, and maybe the rest of the GSM world still looks to europe to be the leaders in GSM. Nokia and others are still a powerful force. These companies lose alot when they lose the royalty stream that would be generated by WCDMA based systems worldwide.
It is odd though that in 04 circuit-switched is still in the game when packet data has been around now for more than a decade.
Of course, you know all of this, I am sure.
e.k.
