Dell revises Q2 profit forecast higher
By CBS MarketWatch

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Dell Inc. raised its second-quarter earnings forecast Friday, reflecting higher operating profitability and a lower global tax rate.

The Austin, Texas-based company (DELL: news, chart, profile) said it now expects to achieve earnings of 31 cents a share for the three months ending July 30, or 2 cents better than the average analyst estimate as compiled by Thomson First Call.

Dell issued its updated forecast in conjunction with the company's annual meeting, during which Kevin Rollins will formally become CEO.

The revised profit forecast implies growth of 29 percent from the year-ago quarter.

Dell's quarterly revenue is expected to be $11.7 billion, unchanged from management's previous forecast and matching analyst forecasts.

Highlights in the current quarter include "robust" sales of enterprise systems and services, gains in markets outside the United States, and improved shipments to U.S. small- and medium-business customers, Dell said.

In addition, the company said that industry analysts' preliminary estimates indicate Dell's overall global market share in the second quarter increased to more than 18 percent.

The PC maker's stock closed Thursday up 3 cents at $34.87.
