The issue about language is a non- issue, imo. All language is to manipulate others- why talk if you don't want something (and something could be anything from conversation to a glass of water.) The real question is, "Are we manipulating people in a way we like?" Some people would look at the article and say "yes" others would say "no". If there an objectively correct answer? I think not. It's all simply a matter of preference.
