Whoopi slams GOP -- again
NEW YORK, July 16 (UPI) -- Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg, canned as a spokesman for diet drink SlimFast over comments she made about President Bush, is again lashing out at the GOP.
Goldberg reportedly made puns of a sexual nature about the president during a celebrity-studded fundraiser in New York in support of Sen. John F. Kerry's presidential bid.
"America's heart and soul is freedom of expression without fear of reprisal," said Goldberg, who was dumped as a SlimFast spokeswoman after outraged Republicans threatened to boycott the company, the New York Daily News reported Friday.
"The fact that I am no longer the spokesman for SlimFast makes me sad, but not as sad as someone trying to punish me for exercising my right as an American to speak my mind," she said.
The event, which raised $7.5 million, became a political issue after Kerry described the performance by Goldberg and others as representative of the "heart and soul" of America. Challenging the Democrats to make a tape of the event public, Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman said the event proves Kerry doesn't "share the same values" as the rest of America.
The Kerry-Edwards campaign has thus far resisted the GOP's requests to make the tape public, though Kerry has since moderated his statements about the event, trying to distance himself from the comments made by some of the performers. |
