"Howcome the rest of the world can develop energy resources responsibly and without ecological disasters, whether nuclear, oil, or gas, both on- and off-shore, and we cannot do so here? Doesn't anyone ever pose this question in developing energy policy? "

The above is one of the tragedies of our mutually failed political system. Neither side has distinguished themselves. Bush has failed to publicly make the case. The dems love high prices because it is an issue - that is all they care about now - and they do everything possilbe to keep prices high by restricting supply. A national honest debate is needed. A balanced policy of growth and conservation is necessary. One of the ironies of the situation - if you listened to Don Coxe - SUVs is the big money maker for Detroit. Killing the SUV will hurt Detroit and the UAW. I cannot believe the UAW has not awakened to this fact.
