Ridhard Russell on Martha Stewart (7/16/04):

<But the eyes of the nation today weren't on inflation of deflation, they were on poor Martha Stewart, who received her sentence today. Americans seems to be taking a strange, sadistic delight in the fate of Martha. Yesterday, the New York Times included a front page article showing that Martha was having a good time -- going to openings, top restaurants, enjoying herself. Of course, the fact that Martha wasn't crushed and depressed by what has befallen her -- drives a certain sadistic segment of the public to distraction.

The sentence, five months in prison plus five months in home confinement with two years probation. The decent judge gave Martha the least sentence possible. After all, Martha never hurt anybody, and my guess is that in a month after prison all will be forgotten. So have the "Mighty fallen?" I don't think so. Martha's a good person, and she made one mistake that she shouldn't have made. The stock in MSO jumped over two points today. Wall Street knows what it's doing>

Martha Stewart is the victim of a witchhunt-As a socially uncool, non-smooth talker, this woman entrepeneur made an easy target. Reminds me of the Roman Empire-throw her to the lions so the public can get its taste of blood. This lady did absolutely nothing wrong.

Incidently the mistake she made was talking to the Feds without a lawyer. She had done no crime so she assumed she ahd nothing to worry about. Big mistake-when they want to get you, they are going to get you.

And the jury could not be told that she was being accused of covering up a non-crime.
