Most Americans will rally round the flag. But there's a sizable camp who will blame another attack not on OBL but on Bush. 'he made them mad, he didn't address their grievances, he kicked the hornets nest in Iraq, etc.'

Nadine,
Those who believe their freedoms are a right but not invulnerable will rally. The Kerry led left that wants a babysitter will moan.

I don't think OBL understands or frankly cares enough about the mentality of the West to have designed this outcome. In 9/11, the medium was the message and OBL was content to be "the scourge of Allah". A more short-term political mentality was at work in the Madrid bombings.

I think obl and his senior advisors are both extremely clever and quite capable of evaluating and projecting our likely responses. They even tested our responses before hammering us. By some reports, they are conducting similar tests again.

The success in Madrid ensures similar aq attacks will be attempted to influence elections elsewhere.
