This whole Wilson thing smells of self-puffery to me. Think of the image of the frog in Aesop's Fables blowing himself up.

Wilson has convinced himself that he was picked, despite politics, because he was the acknowledged expert on Niger (and NOT because his wife recommended him, no matter what memoes are uncovered), and that his report of denials from the various politicos he drank tea with were of course authoritative and of course passed round to everybody as the last word on the subject. And naturally he exposed the uranium deal docs as forgeries (this last one gets dicey because it would have required clairavoyance).

But you know, I bet he believes it. It's just not the view that the CIA seems to have taken, which had to be talked into sending him, and found his reported denials matter-of-course and not very important. The one bit of news he did bring supported possible uranium deals in 1999.
