Fed's Greenspan-China economy not sinking further
Tue Jul 20, 2004 03:47 PM ET
WASHINGTON, July 20 (Reuters) - China's economic growth has deliberately slowed but does not appear to be sinking further, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Tuesday, adding that China does not represent an inflation threat to the United States.
"Clearly through the second quarter, where their quarter-by-quarter rate of growth really slowed virtually to a halt, they exhibited considerable removal of very major elements of growth. However they don't seem to be sinking much further," Greenspan told Congress.

"I do not believe that the Chinese can export inflation to us," he added, saying it was unlikley that cuts in China's steel production would produce any significant rise in steel prices.
