it is a matter of character. Perhaps if Bush had served in Vietnam instead of playing at being a pilot half a world away from the battle, while working on political campaigns, he would have had a better idea of what was involved. It really is a matter of character.

Oddly enough, there are many who haven't served in combat yet who are wise enough, empathetic enough and imaginative enough to have a really good emotional and intellectual understanding of what war is. Unfortunately, "Bring em on" Bush is obviously not one of them.

If you haven't done so, you might want to read the Brinkley book "Tour of Duty," which goes into painstaking detail on Kerry's tour in Vietnam. I'm in the middle of the book and it makes me feel very comfortable with Kerry as a warrior yet one who understands and agonizes over what it is that's asked of those who are in the firing line when we go to war.
