New kidnaping tactic shows terrorists know they are losing

Iraq terrorists have released new video showing six Arab men they have taken hostage. All the men are employees of a Kuwaiti services company, and come from a few different Arab countries, including Egypt and Yemen.

The terrorists say that the men will be beheaded if the Kuwaiti company does not abandon business operations in Iraq and remove its presence therefrom.

None of the countries of the hostages have a military presence in Iraq.

I think this new kind of demand reveals that the terrorists know they are losing in their war against democratization and the reconstruction of Iraqi society. The Kuwaiti company and others like it are deeply involved in reconstruction of Iraq.

Every week, most Iraqis see that their standard of living is rising, the amenities of civilization are returning and progress is being made toward effective self-government. If, as Mao wrote, successful insurgents are fish that swim in a sea of the people, then the terrorists' pond is getting shallow and brackish, indeed.

So the terrorists strike not against a military force, against whom they would lose badly, but against another Arab Muslim company cementing Iraq's progress toward democracy and freedom.

Grimly, I think this development shows that the terrorists are being pushed back and know it. It's a desperate measure.
