SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) - Verizon Communications is expected to announce Thursday that it is launching a nationwide Internet calling service, according to a published report.

Verizon (VZ: news, chart, profile) will offer the service, which allows unlimited local and long distance calling, in more than 130 cities, reported the online version of the Wall Street Journal, citing the company.

A high-speed Internet connection is required to use the technology, and the nation's largest phone company will charge consumers with high-speed Internet connections who aren't already its customers $39.95 a month, according to the Journal.

Verizon broadband subscribers will be charged $34.95 per month, the Journal reported, and a $29.95 per month service will be offered to its existing broadband customers as an introductory offer for the first six months.

The service will feature call management functions such as call forwarding, conference calling, and an address book, said the Journal.

Shares of Verizon ended Tuesday's session down 60 cents, or 1.7 percent, at $34.13.
