It's best to take the sting out of bad news by
breaking it yourself.



Lawrence O'Donnell, appearing last night on Scarborough, had an interesting take on the Berger situation.

His thesis:

1) Berger alerted the Kerry campaign to the investigation;

2) Kerry campaign told Berger he had to get the word out;

3) Story is leaked (by Berger or by the campaign itself), and the campaign sits back to see the reaction. In view of the firestorm, they have no choice but to cut Berger loose.

O'Donnell's take, which makes sense, is this could not have been leaked/released by the Republicans. From a timing perspective, it would be more in the interest of the Republican party to have this info ome out during the Democratic convention or else in late Oct., closer to the election.

FWIW, O'Donnell is a Democrat.
