Further comment to my previous post. When my family member was diagnosed with kidney cancer, I subscribed to a kidney cancer support group -- I think it was the one on the American Kidney Association website. It was really terrible to read the posts on there from Americans whose health insurance wouldn't cover removal of a cancerous kidney. Basically, many insurance companies tell people that the prognosis for recovery is just so crappy that they won't pay for the operation to remove the kidney, so these patients are told point-blank "prepare to die soon". Others who had either very bad or poor health insurance policies were told that, if they could come up with X amount of dollars -- I believe it was about $80-90K (up front), they could have the operation. I felt so bad for these people -- in fact, it got so depressing reading their posts and then finally reading a post from a family member saying goodbye to everyone because the person had died, that I finally unsubscribed.

Similarly, for a long time, I was subscribed to a support and info group for people who have a fairly rare lung disease. It just so happens that many of the people who suffer from it are U.S. war veterans. Most of them couldn't get proper treatment and couldn't get the expensive med that is used to treat this disease. It was pathetic reading their posts about how their conditions was worsening and they were being given a big run-around by what seems to be a miserable, uncaring system that treats people like nothing but walking wallets that either can afford treatment, or are booted out the door because they don't have the bucks to pay for proper treatment.

To say that I have been less than impressed by what I've seen of the U.S. health system would be a gross understatement. I'll take our made-in-Canada health care system any old day of the week. It's not perfect, but it's probably as close as it can be.
