Wonder what Q will do for 4G? There's no way it's going to be allowed to pull the kind of royalty deal it did with CDMA.

When, realistically, will the royalties start to diminish?

As of yet I see no technology on the horizon that provides a significant technical or cost advantage. OFDM has come along and provided CDMA a run for its money, but doesn't seem to be substantially better and everything else is way way behind. Thus my guess is that 4D is likely to be more about software, not air interface per se. And CDMA is the larger base (compared to the only real competitor - OFDM). So I'd guess Qualcomm has at least another 10 years of run time (= the time for something to come from below the radar to domination is virtually certain to be 10 years or more).
