Well, that's true. Some of the "progress" seems fleeting at times when things like Abu Ghraib happen. Which is one of the reasons why I don't like the Republican approach to "problem solving". They often create more problems than they solve. We could solve our energy problems, and not create new ones like Abu Ghraib in the process.

I guess the important thing is that things like Abu Ghraib are exposed and people are prosecuted. I'm sure all sorts of horrible things went on in previous wars that went unexposed and unpunished. And, internal problems like institutionalized racism are slowly waning. Sure racism exists, and will more or less always exist, but there's a big difference when society officially condones racism, versus official fighting against it.
