I saw a Charlie Rose interview with the NYT reporter who'd just returned from months in Iraq (can't remember his name; a young guy, Jeffery something). He said in the beginning there were happy Iraqis who genuinely believed US will make Iraq an example for the middle east. However today most Iraqis wish US had never invaded because their lives are considerably worse than they were before. Among other things, he said it is very common to carry all sorts of arms with you like in Afghanistan, but under Saddam there was no such thing and there was relative safety...anyway, I think hiring Iraqis to do most of the work can solve plenty of the problems.
