so if the enemy of your enemy is your friend
A dangerous philosophy, I think.

The Iranians were our enemies after deposing the Shah and taking our embassy personnel hostage. So we supported Saddam of Iraq in the Iran-Iraq War.

The Soviets were our enemy in the Cold War. So we supported the muhijadeen in the Afghanistan civil war. They became the Taliban and sheltered and supported OBL.

Perhaps our friends should be those who would be our friends anyway. The UK certainly qualifies. Australia and Canada are in there. Most of the European nations. A number of Asian nations.

But "enemy of your enemy is your friend" can blow up in your face. The the enemy of your enemy can become your new enemy.
