Jeffy--

Well, actually I was talking about E. coli, but was going on about the VIX earlier. I don't know what sort of take we ought to have on it, but certainly it seems to be an indicator of anxiety. I can't find (though I haven't looked very hard) a VIX chart that goes back more than five years, but if I'm not mistaken it was also hovering around 30 just before the October '87 unpleasantness.

Be nice to think of it as having signalled a bottom Friday (though not till I'm out of my damned puts, thank you), except that we're not really very far off record highs.

It has indeed been jumping up when the selling starts, and subsiding when the buying begins, but at 26.71 it's still pretty high. A few months back it was much lower most of the time, only surging to 25 or so around expiry time. So I'd say it's still telling us we're very nervous. We'll see what it does next week.

As for Friday, well....go figure. I have NO IDEA what Mr Market was thinking...

Janice
