I remember the critics' opinions of Self Portrait; probably the first time I said to myself "Oh well, I guess I'm not as sophisticated as I thought. But, what the hell, I like it so I'm gonna listen to it and I don't care what the critics say." Same attitude led me to appreciate Norman Rockwell later.

I found the album to be a very soothing counterpoint to the times. I got it just after spending a few weeks on the periphery of the riots at college and having the semester end abruptly - no more classes, just "School's over - finals are optional. If you don't want to take them, you'll get the grade you had as of May 1." It was a pretty intense time - so much so that I don't even remember that year's cicada invasion.

And regarding bike racing - I'm gradually learning that it really is a pretty complex sport. The idea of a team whose members pretty much sacrifice themselves for the benefit of the lead rider is unique. Also the protocol among competing riders - slowing down to wait for a competitor who's been delayed so that you win only by outriding him is also nice. And, as competitive as Lance is, he doesn't seem to mind seeing someone else win a stage, as long as it doesn't put him at a disadvantage in terms of winning the Tour. I wonder whether he'd have gone all out to win Thursday if the leader of that stage hadn't been a German. A lot of little subplots in the race that make it worth following.
