Charles, the hardware to run NT is still significantly cheaper, because Solaris really requires Sparc hardware to be practical. Solaris X86 is, unfortunately, not a viable platform, due to lack of software. I have used Solaris X86, and found it reasonably fast and stable. Most people prefer to use Linux in the application I used it in - general Internet services/gateway - though, and I did run into the "lack of software" problem. For example, Netscape does not port to Solaris X86.

Further, in the applications that I have in mind, you would not need an unlimited license. If you are going to be serving so many users that you need an unlimited license, then I would agree that Sun/Solaris is more appropriate.
