But the reality is that a person who can learn math, physics or computer science with moderately hard work can become a teacher without cracking a book.
Ah, but you forget the artificial entrance barriers that have been erected: those teaching credentials. It is often not requires that they actually know anything about the subject they are teaching, but must know "teaching" as a general art or science or whatever.
